Following on from his live session on our yacht during Midem Festival in June, Trackd dropped in with Vancouver-born singer-songwriter and The Voice of Germany 2017 semi-finalist – David Blair.

Trackd: Tell us a bit about the first song you ever wrote – what was it called, and what inspired it?

David Blair:  I believe my first song I ever wrote was called ‘Diamonds’ it was a really long time ago and I think its on a tape cassette somewhere – I don’t even know where it is now – it’s kind of sad now because I would love to hear it again! It was a love song and it was just the first thing that came to my mind to write about – I’m not sure why I wrote it or what sparked the initial idea but diamonds was in referral to the love being strong like a diamond and lasting forever!

T: What’s the highlight of your music career thus far?

DB:  So far I’ve had many highlights – but I have to say being in this years season of The Voice of Germany is certainly up there with favourite moments in my music journey!

T: Do you tend to perform with a band live or do you do solo sets as well? Which set-up do you prefer?

DB:  I play mostly solo right now for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, I’ve wanted to work on entertaining crowds alone on stage to hone my skills as an entertainer and performer. I felt like if I could do that alone then I had something to really offer with a band.  Secondly, the budget isn’t always there to have a band accompany me for a lot of my tours, so right now its more often a one man show.  I like both set ups – it really depends on the show that I want to create.

T: Do you continue to write when you’re on the road?

DB:  I always write – and now with this app – I think I’ll be doing even more writing because of the tracking capabilities! I love it!

T: What music have you got on your Trackd profile and is there any demos or music on your profile you’d like to challenge any of our users to have a go at re-tracking or putting their own spin on?

DB:  I’m currently working on a project that involves very simple production – just tracking acoustic guitar and vocals and writing songs in that format – or just piano and vocals – so this will be a great tool moving forward in doing that!  I’m totally open and excited to see what people can do with re-tracking and remixing what I’ve done – it was the main point of me doing such a project this year!

T: What’s next for David Blair? Any upcoming releases?

DB:  I’m working on a new album – I don’t have a name for it yet but it will come out in spring of 2018 and I have shows booked in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in January, February and March.  I’m planning a trio band tour for end of May/June so that will be exciting as well.  Currently still in the Voice of Germany and the first battle will come on TV on Sunday the 19th in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg!

T: Any advice for young, budding musicians wishing to take their passion and turn it into a career?

DB:  Calm down and ignore narcissistic stats like likes and followers.  Create songs that are meaningful to the few fans you have now and they will do all the promotion and sharing for you naturally.

T: Best gig you’ve been to?

DB:  Jason Mraz.

T: What’s the *one* song you’d wish you’d written?

DB: “Hallelujah”
